Southern Emergency Response Training and Logistics Center
Awareness Level
Eight hours
The first responders at the awareness level are usually the first on the scene at an
emergency, to identify and notify potential release of hazardous substances. The aim
is to enable them to recognize the presence of hazardous substances in an emergency,
identify the types of hazardous substances involved, understand possible consequences
of the hazards, and realize their role as first responders in the emergency response plans
of their organizations.
This training enables first responders to identify the properties of various types of
hazardous substances by providing them with basic response information (emergency response
guidelines, safety data sheets, hazard class labels, etc.) and enriching their knowledge of
the safe handling of chemicals and responding to emergencies. They will learn how to perform
on-scene control, take protective actions, carry out preliminary analyses of on-scene
situations, record details of types of containers used, and notify other responders for
assistance.
This training introduces relevant regulations and standards, hazard identification, PPE,
and emergency response procedures. Trainees will learn how to consult relevant regulations
and standards; identify hazardous substances and their properties by using hazard labels,
safety data sheets, disaster preparedness and response manuals, and emergency response
guidebooks; handle spills and leaks of hazardous substances; utilize emergency response
information; and master handling response tips at the early stage of emergencies.
